Iron Hands

The hands of Motilal Dar once forged the pipes of Sten Guns and Lee–Enfield rifles for the Mukti Bahini during the liberation. According to Motilal his ancestor Dar Ando Joy Dey was one of the blacksmith who forged the Bibi Mariam Cannon from the 17th century. Motilal continues the family traditions in the present time as a blacksmith forging agricultural implements and cooking utensils.

The nation of progression, aspiration, hope, justice, perseverance, vigilance, peace, prosperity, patriotism and freedom is depicted by the innocence of a child holding a kite above the horizon symbolising the red rising sun in the backdrop of a lush green fertile land.

This was a creative challenge for me to capture the flag of Bangladesh in absolute nature encapsulating the depth and meaning behind the colours of the flag.

The compulsion to convey a story of someone or something will inspire us to evolve, to
want to learn, to adapt, to be educated and to understand our world and the environment through
narratives. To ensure the progress of a Nation, we must first protect and educate our children.

Music is a form of escapism of harsh reality in rural Bangladesh. The listeners feel liberated from their daily hardship from spiritual lyrics and melodies of the Baul singers.

Behind the courteous, selfless and welcoming persona is the face of a survivor of numerous natural disasters, a major war and political unrest. Despite the hardship they are genuine in their friendliness.

Belief

The right to freedom of thought, conscience and belief is a choice made by someone that is
deep rooted within their reasons. Everyone has therightto worship, practice, teach and observe.
The important thing is to accept that some people place a lot of importance on this aspect of their
lives, and to respect their right to believe in whatever they choose to, even if we don’t agree with
them.

Mortuza Baghini (Mortuza Tigress)

The fearless woman, who delivered food in the dark of the night to the Mukthi Bahinis (Freedom Fighters) during the liberation war. In her youthful years she ploughed the land, cut rice crops, and fought for her rights as a widow in a male dominated society whilst raising 3 children. She is the epitome of women power of her time in her surrounding.
